Principle #7: Concern for Community

Cooperative businesses are governed by seven co-op principles that make them unique from other businesses. In previous newsletters, you have read about the other six principles: Open and Voluntary Membership; Democratic Member Control; Members’ Economic Participation; Autonomy and Independence;  Education, Training and Information; and Cooperation Among Cooperatives.

The seventh cooperative principle is Concern for Community.  This principle focuses on the idea that cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies accepted by their members.  Quite simply, people matter to co-ops and the manifestation of this principle means that co-ops support community efforts that focus on human development and social responsibility.  Cooperatives employ and serve people who live in the community.  They also return the fruits of the enterprise back to the community.  This principle emphasizes the vision of long-term, sustainable community development in which a variety of interests, from cultural to economic, intertwine.

The Rooted Carrot Co-op Market is contributing to the health and longevity of the communities it serves by establishing itself in the community. We have done this by investing in human development through providing events for gathering, participation in Co-op decisions, educating members, and promoting the democratic process through Board elections. (Note: Board Applications are being accepted now. Please consider volunteering and running for the Board. Learn more here.)

The Co-op also supports environmental preservation by linking consumers to agricultural producers, whose products are sustainably sourced.  When the Co-op opens you can expect to purchase food that nourishes your body, while being produced in harmony with the land, water, and farmers.  You will also have reliable information about the products you purchase and the financial benefits you will gain from your membership.

The Rooted Carrot Co-op Market encourages stable, healthy communities.  Part of this is through providing job opportunities with good wages and benefits. In addition, we will be a community hub from providing space and events for people to gather and connect to promoting other community activities and organizations to giving back to our community in creative and generous ways. We look forward to continuing the exploration of all of the above as our co-op develops and further establishes itself in the Cedar Valley. Please consider joining the Rooted Carrot as a member today.
