The Rooted Carrot Cooperative Market was founded with a mission to enhance the health and well-being of the Cedar Valley by providing access to fresh, sustainable food and fostering a resilient, vibrant community. We are very encouraged that the city of Cedar Falls’ Resilience Plan closely mirrors our ideals, prioritizing walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods, support for local businesses, and sustainable practices that create a stronger, healthier city for all.
Our values—Local Commitment, Inclusivity, Education, and Sustainability—not only drive our efforts, but also directly support Cedar Falls’ goals for resilience. Here’s how each of our values intersects with the city’s plan, illustrating our shared vision for a thriving community.
Local Commitment
Economic Resilience (C4.1, E6.2)
The Rooted Carrot Co-Op’s commitment to local producers and businesses supports Cedar Falls’ goal of a resilient local economy. By sourcing from local farmers and food artisans, the co-op not only strengthens the local food network but also generates a greater economic multiplier. Research shows that every $1,000 spent at the co-op generates $1,604 in economic activity, a significant boost for Cedar Falls’ economy. A site near the city’s downtown would enhance walkability and accessibility, fitting the city’s vision of mixed-use neighborhoods and sustainable community infrastructure.
Inclusivity
Equity and Accessibility (C3.3)
In pursuit of fair access to healthy food options, cooperative grocery stores are inclusive, welcoming spaces for all residents. The Cedar Falls Resilience Plan emphasizes equity and inclusivity, aiming to foster an environment where everyone has access to essential resources, including nutritious food. As a community-owned grocery store, the Rooted Carrot will offer a voice to all its members, ensuring that a diverse range of perspectives helps shape our offerings. This inclusivity reflects the city’s commitment to supporting all residents’ health, well-being, and belonging.
Education
Community Education (C3.3)
Education is at the core of both Cedar Falls’ resilience goals and the Rooted Carrot’s mission. By offering workshops on nutrition, sustainable cooking, and environmental impact, the co-op empowers Cedar Falls residents to make informed decisions that benefit their health and the planet. This aligns with the Resilience Plan’s emphasis on community outreach and education, which seeks to increase awareness of sustainable practices and improve overall community resilience. Through our educational programs, we support Cedar Falls’ vision of a knowledgeable, engaged, and resilient community.
Sustainability
Environmental Stewardship (C3.1)
The Resilience Plan’s focus on environmental stewardship is closely matched by the Rooted Carrot’s commitment to sustainable practices. By prioritizing local sourcing, reducing food miles, and implementing eco-friendly operations, the co-op aligns with Cedar Falls’ goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting ecological health. Rooted Carrot Co-Op’s sustainable practices not only support the city’s resilience, but also contribute to a greener Cedar Falls, where resources are managed responsibly, and environmental health is a shared priority.
The Rooted Carrot Co-Op and Cedar Falls share a vision for a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable community. Together, we’re building a future where residents have convenient access to healthy, local food; where small businesses and farms thrive; and where our community can weather economic and environmental changes with strength and unity. Don’t Wait, Cooperate!
