Message from the Board – March 2023

Here is the latest update on what our Board, Committees, and Volunteers have been up to! Thank you everyone for all of the time you spend on bringing a Co-op to Cedar Falls!

Jodie Huegerich,
Board President

Site Information:

The site team was actively looking at one site for the last four to five months and we were hoping to be able to announce a location early in 2023. However, for various reasons we will not be able to move forward with this site. We are still actively looking for a location near downtown Cedar Falls. We have been seeking lease occupancy within established buildings that can either be rehabilitated or torn down to start fresh.

The site team comprises Rooted Carrot members Kate Dunning, Christine Sexton, Terry Stewart, Deanna Wheeler, and Tom Blanford. They bring with them a variety of expertise and experience, including in grocery store and foodservice operations, project management, business ownership and operation, fundraising, real estate contracts, and food production and marketing.

At this point in the Co-op’s development, the Site Team is responsible for all communications with a real estate developer, architects, contractor, store planner, grocery consultants, and members of city staff. They ensure that work is progressing and that the best interests of co-op members are met. After a site is located and it has been approved, they’ll shift their focus more intensely toward the details of store construction and design.

Capital Campaign:

  • We are currently building the campaign committee for the second phase of the campaign.
  • We were successful in raising 42% of our funds in the first phase.
  • Tom Wickersham and Tom Blanford lead our Capital Campaign committee.

What do we need right now?

  • Members! Membership is at the core of everything we do right now!
  • Volunteers! We need people to serve on our committees and help with things like communications, writing, web graphics, content development, events and socials, grant writing, and fundraising.  We truly have many needs right now and it’s an exciting time to be a volunteer because things are moving really fast! The more volunteers we have, the more we are able to move that needle forward toward the opening of the store! Volunteer your Time and Talent – Rooted Carrot Co-op
  • Stay involved! Attend our events such as our potlucks and member mixers. Bring a friend!
