Member Spotlight: Sue Hummel

Sue Hummel and her husband Dan, share their home with their dog Lily, and two cats, Midge and Mr. Pumpkin.  She was born and raised in Waterloo and has lived in Cedar Falls for 28 years. She graduated from Iowa State University and worked at a couple of advertising agencies as a graphic artist. Her heart was with animal care though, so she switched careers and worked as a veterinary assistant for eight years. During that time she started a pet sitting business, which she sold many years later, but she continued to work as an independent contractor for Dusk to Dawn Professional Petsitters. She is also involved in animal rescue, rehabilitation, and foster care.

Sue loves our community for its diversity! One day she could be sitting barefoot in the grass, listening to a local band play, and the next day, be dressed up at the Gallagher-Bluedorn, watching the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony. There are so many activities going on in the community– house concerts, farmers markets, sports, live theater, it’s hard to choose which one to enjoy first! She also loves shopping in the downtown areas of Waterloo and Cedar Falls.
Sue looks forward to the local farmers getting to sell their wares at our new Cedar Falls Co-op.  She loves the idea of the Co-op being a place to meet friends and socialize for a while, like a hub, instead of just a place to shop.
Sue is a devoted cyclist and bibliophile. Her favorite place to be is at their cabin on the Shell Rock River. She always has an art project brewing in her mind, but it often takes a back seat to my pet visits, books, bike, and cabin, but she hopes to multitask successfully in the future!
She is a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, and their cabin is a release site for the Black Hawk Wildlife Rehabilitation group. At church, she is on the RE Board and has been in the handbell choir for almost 30 years. She is a past President of Cedar Valley Cyclists. Currently, she is assisting with the Cedar Falls Authors Festival.
It would be simpler to list the foods Sue doesn’t like (it would be a short list!)  She is a hopeless foodie but embraces it.
Favorite season? All four – that’s one of the things that she loves about being an Iowan!
