From the Board President: New Year, New Changes, and New Energy

Happy New Year!

I know this might come as a surprise to a few of you, but serving as the Co-op’s president isn’t my full-time job! Just like the majority of the Co-op volunteers, we all have regular jobs, so we do our best to squeeze in Co-op work when we can.

I know that if it weren’t for the dedication of an amazing parade of volunteers since our first community meeting seven years ago, we wouldn’t be standing where we are right now. And where are we standing? We are doing quite well. Don’t take my word on it; consider the perspective of others:

The accolades are nice, of course, but I’m here to also update you on some of the specifics. So, without further ado…

The New Co-op Name
As we have reported before, the Co-op is changing its name. Last month, the board unanimously agreed upon the new name. I think you will find this a great way to communicate our mission and our vision to serve the entire Cedar Valley. We are currently working with a designer to create the new brand that will go with the new name. We anticipate making the announcement in February – stay tuned for the big news!

The Site Search Continues
Unfortunately, I don’t have any announcements to make about a future site for the Co-op. I can, however, report that we are continuing to explore all possible options. And, I can report that we are currently looking at some exciting possible locations. As I’ve noted before, we need to keep these negotiations hush-hush until the lease is signed, so I can’t share any details at this point. I think, though, that it’s safe to say we should be able to announce something by the end of the first quarter. Again, stay tuned!

Changes at the Board
In November, we welcomed Jodie Huegerich to the board (“Welcome, Jodie!”), and then in December we began the work of restructuring the board’s officer roles and standing committee structure. This work is necessary as we prepare for entering the third stage of development for the Co-op. I know the board will continue this work in January and February so we’re best prepared to move forward upon the site announcement this spring. Very exciting indeed!

Other Changes
In addition to the changes at the board level, we are seeing a number of other folks step up to volunteer for this work. They are helping with committees and special projects. We are grateful for everyone’s support, and I know we can’t say this enough, but we truly need all the support we can get. This is a grassroots effort and we need your help. Please drop me a line at tomwick@sbcglobal.net if you want to help out. I’m sure there’s a talent you have that will help us receive even more accolades!

In cooperation,
Tom Wickersham
